Speculation about the next Apple iPhone, whether it be the iPhone 4S or 5, continues apace and recently we gave you some news that the next iPhone, or iPhone 5 as we shall call it, is likely to have an improved 8-megapixel camera. We have further news today that appears to back this up and if this info is correct the iPhone 5 camera will match the impressive camera of the Samsung Galaxy S II (S2).
Back in May we told of rumors of an 8-megapixel camera for the iPhone 5 following reports of industry sources saying that Apple could be placing an order for the camera lenses from Largan Precision in the third quarter. This tied in with speculation of a fall release for the iPhone 5. Following this we told recently how OmniVision had been named to supply the camera sensors for the iPhone 5 and that it would be an 8-megapixel camera.
Now we have news that the beta version of iOS 5.0 (due for public release this fall) supplied to developers has been found to have upped the maximum resolution for exports from 720p to 1080p. This will enable iOS devices, the iPhone, iPad and iPod touch to both decode and encode video content at 1080p, full HD. According to Christian Zibreg over on 9to5Mac, this backs up claims of an 8-megapixel video camera with full 1080p video capture for the iPhone 5, as there would be little point in iOS 5 supporting 1080p otherwise.
Over on T3, Luke Johnson reminds us that if the iPhone 5 does indeed have an 8-megapixel camera with 1080p video recording, then it will equal the camera on the Samsung Galaxy S II. The Galaxy S II is certainly the phone of the moment with U.S. release coming on all major carriers, rumored to begin in July. We recently told how the delay of the iPhone 5 will give the S2 a huge advantage on sales, especially given the high specs of the Galaxy S2. If news of the improved camera for the iPhone 5 proves correct it may entice more people to now hang on for the next iPhone. In fact we’d go so far as to say Apple really needs this improved camera capability for the next iPhone to keep in the game with impressive upcoming Android smartphones, such as the S2 and also Motorola’s Droid Bionic.
