What is IPv6? IPv6 is the successor of IPv4. IP meaning Internet Protocol, which basically specifies your internet address of your system for mere data transfer. The Internet works by exchange of small packets of data with some bit rate, too technical stuff. I will discuss only the overview.


The IPv4 uses 32bit for Internet protocol(IP) address, which is still in use. Then why the shift? Due to excessive registrations of Domain names and addresses the IPv4 is running out of addresses to provide a unique specific address for your domain/site. A sample IP address of IPv4 is 127.0.0.1

The need to Upgrade to IPv6 is legitimate. The IPv6 uses a 128bit IP addressing. The more the increase in number of bits, the higher the speed of data transfer, the higher the speed of data transfer the higher the speed of internet. So, that's why people are speaking of Internet taking to a whole new dimension.There is an added advantage in having 128bit data transfer, there is a increase in numbers of IP address, a sample address might look like(hex): 2001:0db8:85a3:0000:0000:8a2e:0370:7334

Can we use this IPv6?

Yes, but not yet. To use this IPv6 we need to change everything eventually. OS and hardware needs to be updated, I mean only few top companies have configured there hardware description for IPv6. But in coming days it will soon catch up.

So, when will India have this?

India will start using IPv6 (Internet Protocol version 6) from March 2012, according to a new roadmap released by the Indian government. All telecom and ISPs will have to be IPv6-compliant by the end of next year and offer IPv6 services there after, the government said in a statement issued by the country's Press Information Bureau. Federal and state government ministries and departments and public sector companies will switch over to IPv6 services by March 2012, according to the government.
